Introduction
Phonics 1a is a beginning Phonics and Reading program that thoroughly covers the short and long vowel sounds, providing the foundation for reading success.Phonics 1a is now available as three lessons:
- 1a - Short Vowels
- 1a - Long Vowels
- 1a - Y as a Vowel & Review
Master Course and Lessons
Phonics 1a is designed similar to a text book, you can start at the beginning and read to the end, or you can go to a chapter/leeson you want. Phonics 1a is the master course and contains all of the lessons of the course. However, a teacher can assign individual lessons to the students, to work on the specific skills or subjects.Each lesson is similar a chapter of a book, and is much shorter than the large master course. The lessons can be usually be completed in one setting. Students can earn a "Gold Star Certivicate of Achiement" in each lesson and in the master course. The course/lesson icon will show a gold star when a student completes a lesson or course, indicating completion.
Master Course Features
- A Pretest assessment to measure the student's prior knowlege of the subjects. A posttest to measure the effectiveness of the course/lessons. Pretests and Posttests are also available in each lesson.
- This interactive educational software program includes 5 songs and 20 activities. The "Learn the Words" section allows the student to see and hear how over 200 words are formed using phonics sounds.

Mini Lessons/Games
Short Vowels
- Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page.
- Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequence of letters.
- Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
- Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words and spoken single-syllable words.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or many of the most frequent sound for each consonant.
- Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
Long Vowels
- Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequence of letters.
- Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or many of the most frequent sound for each consonant.
- Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
- Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
Y as a Vowel and Review
- Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequence of letters.
- Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
- Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words and spoken single-syllable words.
- Count, pronounce, blend and segment syllables in spoken words.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or many of the most frequent sound for each consonant.
- Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).
- Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
- Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
