Computers for Youth
NEW YORK, May 2008 - Computers for Youth (CFY, www.cfy.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the home learning environment of low-income school children, today named Language Arts Review 3a With Sports the winner of its 2008 Family Learning Software Award. The title was selected by a panel of software experts, New York City middle-school students and education executives from some of the most prominent school districts across the nation. Dan Sheffield, the president of the company that developed the software, Help Me 2 Learn, will accept the award at CFY’s Tech Leadership Awards event in New York City on June 17, 2008 at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers.
"The home learning environment holds the greatest untapped potential for improving children’s academic and life-long success," said Elisabeth Stock, CEO and co-founder of CFY. "Help Me 2 Learn’s software is a terrific example of an educational resource that motivates children to master learning skills at home while having fun with their family. With 60 votes counted (43 from children and 17 from adults) and 165 hours of logged play, our judges -- children and adults alike -- declared that the Language Arts Review 3a With Sports was the most engaging and educational software of the year.
Language Arts Review 3a uses young adult characters and sports games to engage students in fundamental language arts skills. This program is especially appealing to students who desire lots of action and activity to keep their attention. Language Arts Review 3a combines the Help Me 2 Learn Company's proven teaching techniques with a wide variety of interactive lessons which present each topic with easy-to-understand instruction, supported by lively animated graphics and sound effects to ensure users have fun while learning.
"We are proud to accept the Family Learning Software of the Year Award from Computers for Youth," said Dan Sheffield, president of Help Me 2 Learn, "It's particularly gratifying to hear that our title was selected by not only by the top "ed tech" executives from school districts around the country but also by the parents and children who are using our engaging software to learn together and to have fun together!"
As part of its call for submissions last fall, CFY received fifteen software titles that were featured at CFY's Education Executives Day. At this event, CFY's Student Software Team presented these titles to education technology executives from some of the most prominent school districts across the United States. The education technology executives then narrowed the titles to five finalists (see below) based on the software’s ability to improve students' academic competencies and promote family involvement. The winner was then selected by CFY students and their parents/guardians from across NYC.
Said Los Angeles-based Themy Sparangis, a three-year veteran of the Ed Exec program, "I am thrilled that CFY is giving this award to the deserving, California-based Help Me 2 Learn. CFY is improving the home learning environment of low-income children -- something incredibly important if we are to eliminate the achievement gap between low-income students and their higher income peers."
Computers for Youth (CFY) is tackling an important national problem—across our country, we are failing to provide low-income children the support they need during the critical middle school years. As a result, test scores (particularly in math) are falling between the fifth and sixth grades. CFY's approach is innovative and effective. Unlike efforts that focus solely on the classroom, CFY helps low-income students do better academically by improving their learning environment at home. Specifically, CFY partners with high-poverty middle schools to improve the educational resources in students' home, enhance parent-child interaction around learning, and help teachers connect classroom learning with the home. Their innovative technology (top-notch educational software loaded onto refurbished computers) in conjunction with family training both enriches students' home learning environment and increases the confidence of their parents as learning partners. CFY has shown significant results on student test scores, class effort and parental confidence in helping their children learn. Since beginning operations in 1999, they have reached more than 25,000 students and parents from 40 schools in New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta. By 2010, CFY will expand operations to the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles and will begin to grow its affiliate network to reach all 50 U.S. states. CFY also works on a broader scale to influence education policy. For more information please visit www.cfy.org.

YUCAIPA, CA, April 2008 - We are announcing the release of our newest program, "Games of Math 3 – Multiplication". We are very extremely excited about this new program, designed for students in Grade 3 or higher.
Games of Math 3 - Multiplication is the first in our math series, and contains many of the familiar features found in our other programs. However, we have added some new features and controls in the Teachers and Parents section.
Games of Math 3 - Multiplication includes six great games. Each game has a different purpose and a different challenge. Home Run Derby, one of the most popular games in the program, puts fun into solving basic multiplication problems. At different points in the game, the number of questions and the form of the questions change until at the higher levels, the students will have to enter the answers. With the Long Jump Game, the student must answer basic multiplication problems as fast as possible so the runner can build up enough speed to make a good jump. The Blowing Balloons Game combines reading skills with multiplication word problems. This game uses wind speed and drop accuracy along with a time limit to add interest to the game. Slam Dunk is a timed game with a short tutorial that uses basketball to present negative numbers and decimals. Downhill Ski requires concentration and gaming skills while it presents multiplication patterns in a timed ski game. In one of the more challenging games, Bowling for Bugs, the student solves basic multiplication algebra problems and then bowls for accuracy. In the practice area, the student has a choice between a timed test and a 30-question test that is not timed. Both are multiple choice, and the student can review the questions they missed and retake the test.
The objective of the program is to improve math skills by playing the games, beating the level goal for each game, moving through the levels, and earning a gold star for each game. Games of Math 3 - Multiplication keeps the student engaged and motivated to practice and get better. A student who earns a gold star can print a certificate of achievement for that game. Earn all six gold stars and the student can print a certificate of achievement for the program. Believe me, that is quite an achievement! Our Super Star Tracking System is simple enough for the student to understand, yet powerful enough that a parent or teacher will be able to easily judge the child's progress.
The Teachers' and Parents' Section puts vital information about a student or class at your fingertips, including pre and post-test assessment programs, teacher/lab program controls, a user guide, and lesson plans. In addition, students taking the course with the School, Lab, and Network versions can take a pre-test and a post-test to pinpoint their level when they start, and determine their progress after using the program.
Our goal at Help Me 2 Learn Company is to produce educational material of the highest quality. The educational content and activities of Games of Math 3 - Multiplication, along with our Super Star System, combine to create an effective and fun learning experience.
Games of Math 3 – Multiplication is compatible with PC and Mac computers. YUCAIPA, CA, Fall 2006 - Help Me 2 Learn Company is pleased to announce the release of "Language Arts Review 3a -- Advanced Level with Sports" and "Language Arts Review 3b -- Advanced Level II with Sports", the latest addition to its award-winning educational software line. Designed as a review for remedial and at-risk students, Language Arts Review features young adult characters and sports games to engage students in fundamental language arts skills. They are especially appealing to students who require lots of action and activity to keep their attention. Language Arts Review techniques will also help the older students and adults improve their reading and comprehension while having a great time doing it.
Dan Sheffield, President of Help Me 2 Learn Company, says, "We've had a number of customers looking for lower level language arts and reading software with graphics appropriate for middle school, high school, prison and adult students, so we decided to upgrade the graphics from our Phonics 3a and 3b to provide such a product. Our research shows that younger students do not mind if the graphics and characters are older, however older students tend to be offended by anything that looks like it is for younger kids. These products are so engaging, they will challenge and entertain students of any age."
Both Language Arts Review 3a and 3b feature the "Gold Medal Motivational and Tracking System", whereby students receive a "Certificate of Completion" for each "Coach Time" activity they complete. They earn points in each "Learn the Words Speed Round" and can earn a bronze, silver or gold medal in each sports game. The scores are displayed on the Gold Medal Progress Report and a report for an individual student or the entire class can be printed from the Teachers and Parents section.
Combining Help Me 2 Learn Company's proven phonics teaching techniques with a wide variety of interactive lessons, Language Arts Review presents each topic with easy-to-understand instruction supported by lively animated graphics and sound effects to ensure users have fun while learning. In the Coach Time section, expert "coaches" introduce each topic and teach the vital points of phonics while instructing how to play a sport. The action-packed games keep the user fully engaged while exploring the diverse educational content including: grammar 1 (nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives), grammar 2 (subject-verb agreement and verb tense), literature, writing, punctuation, capitalization, spelling strategies, reading comprehension strategies and much more. In Learn the Words Speed Rounds, students can study over 400 words presented in syllables and over 2,500 spoken words in sentences. Sports Games and Review presents challenging activities from basketball to karate, tennis to cross country running, even downhill skiing and kayaking. Our games give students immediate feedback on their progress in mastering the material, driving the student to do better and go on to win the Gold Medal.
Also included are pre and post-test assessment programs, teacher/lab program controls, a user guide, and lesson plans. The Teachers and Parents section puts vital information about a student or class at your fingertips. A teacher can track each class member’s progress, print individual or group data viewed on the progress report, and set control features for each class. In addition, students taking the course in the school, lab, and network versions can take a pre-test and post-test to pinpoint their level when they started, and how much they have learned after using the program.

YUCAIPA, CA, January 2000 - The Help Me 2 Learn Company announced the January release of "Help Me 2 Learn - Letters and Numbers" in the "Super Star Series" line of educational CD-ROM products. "Help Me 2 Learn - Letters and Numbers" is the first update of the current product line, which is currently sold under the name of Twin Sisters Productions. "Help Me 2 Learn - Letters and Numbers" offers more than 8 hours of educational instruction, activity and music. It is designed to compete with any Letters and Numbers type of educational CD-ROM program available in the market today. This highly interactive learning program now features cute, animated characters, which rivet a child's interest and attention.
Dan Sheffield, owner of the Help Me 2 Learn Company, said, "We went all out on Letters and Numbers." He further explained that, "We started with our basic concept that children will learn at a faster pace when the teaching is presented with music. Then we added games that are based on the material covered in the songs that help children visualize the learning. Sure, we made the learning a lot of fun, but we really focused on making a product that will help give the child the basic skills needed to succeed in school and in life. Then we made sure that the child would remain motivated to complete the program by rewarding the child with stars. Most children are going to want to keep going until they have earned a gold star on every activity."
What makes this product different from the others? Letters and Numbers incorporates a unique "Super Star System" throughout the program to keep track of the child's progress. Children are encouraged to go for the gold star. To receive a gold star, they must correctly answer every question in an activity. If they miss a question, they get a silver star. It is challenging, but not too hard. The child may repeat an activity until they achieve a gold star. The star system gives the child a sense of achievement and it gives a parent or teacher a way of tracking the child's progress.
This new, improved version of Letters and Numbers includes 11 sing-a-long songs in 15 two-level activities, making a total of 46 songs and activities. Plus, there are even more activities in the Parents and Teachers Section. Many new activities have been added to Letters and Numbers, such as Leap Frog Math, Space Spelling and Phonics Word Finder Game.
"Help Me 2 Learn - Letters and Numbers" is divided into three sections. In the Letters Section children will learn: the letter names, the alphabet order from A to Z and from Z to A, recognition of the beginning letter of a word, beginning phonics sounds, ending sounds, beginning spelling and reading. In the Numbers Section children will learn: number recognition to 20, counting to 20, the number order to 20, and beginning addition/subtraction to 10. There is also a Parents and Teachers section with lots of print out pages with the lyrics to the songs, Dot to Dots, and activities from the program.
"Help Me 2 Learn - Letters and Numbers" is appropriate for ages 2 through 7. The program retails for $24.95. You may contact the Help Me 2 Learn Company at (909) 206-2203 for more information. You can visit our web site at www.helpme2learn.com to view samples of the program.
