Make Your Own Clay

With these modeling activities you can create many types of pottery items, wall hangings, sculptures, or anything you can imagine. This is a great way for them to learn about the abbreviations and how to prepare a recipe and follow directions. The ingredients for these recipes can be found at your local grocery store.

Salt Ceramic Mix

  1. Mix ingredients together in a pan over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick.
  2. Remove from heat, form into a ball and let cool just a bit.
  3. Knead thoroughly and form into desired objects.
  4. Set out until dry then paint.

Excess dough may be stored for a short while in plastic wrap or a ziplock bag.

Baker's Dough Mix

  1. Mix the ingredients in a bowl, adding water as necessary.
  2. Knead for about 5 minutes until soft.
  3. Mold or cut into desired shapes.

Colored items may air-dry overnight to hardness. Un-colored items can be baked at 300 degrees for one to two hours until hard. Unused dough may be stored for a short while in a plastic airtight bag.

Activity Extension:
